The mission of the Department Of Physics and Geosciences is to provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand the physical  processes that have shaped the Earth and the Universe around it , as well as man's role in these processes. This is accomplished by

• providing core and service courses for students majoring in other subjects;

• providing advanced training, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, to students majoring in Astronomy, Geography, Geology and Physics; and

• providing the appropriate knowledge required by students preparing for careers in education.

In particular, the department's faculty and staff are dedicated to providing advanced training to its students by

• offering high quality programs designed to ensure that the student is prepared for the next step in their professional career, be it in government, academia, or industry;

• providing access to state-of-the-art equipment appropriate to their field of expertise; and

• ensuring training in modern techniques by providing opportunities to participate in research, conferences and internships.

By achieving this mission, the Department Of Physics and Geosciences will help build the technical infrastructure needed in South Texas region.
